2-Day Itinerary for Wayanad

  1. Day 1: Pookode Lake
    30 minutes (12.8 km) from Kalpetta

    Pookode Lake is a magnificent freshwater lake, surrounded by lush green forests. It's a perfect spot for a morning picnic, paddle boating, and exploring the serene natural beauty of Wayanad. There are plenty of walking trails around the lake where you can spot various species of birds and butterflies. Additionally, there is a freshwater aquarium, a children's park, and a handicrafts and spices emporium nearby.

  2. Day 1: Edakkal Caves
    1 hour 25 minutes (35.6 km) from Pookode Lake

    Edakkal Caves are a prehistoric site that symbolizes ancient stone age carvings. The cave paintings and engravings inside the caves showcase neolithic men hunting, working, and their ways of life. The trek to the caves is also an adventure in itself. The trek is around 1.5 km uphill, and once you reach the rock-face entrance of the cave, there is another 400 m uphill to reach the actual cave.

  3. Day 1: Wayanad Heritage Museum
    37 minutes (13.6 km) from Edakkal Caves

    The Wayanad Heritage Museum showcases the history, culture, and traditions of Wayanad. The museum's exhibits include ancient artifacts like weapons, pottery, and hunting tools and also an impressive numismatic collection. The museum is situated inside the Government Boys High School in Ambalavayal and is a window to the past of Wayanad and Kerala in general.

  4. Day 2: Banasura Sagar Dam
    1 hour 10 minutes (38.8 km) from Kalpetta

    Banasura Sagar Dam is the largest earth dam in India, situated in the midst of the Banasura Hills. The dam's picturesque surroundings, including the Banasura hills and the lush greenery, and the crystal clear waters of the dam are mesmerizing. You can go trekking in the Banasura hills and enjoy various water activities like pedal boating, a speed boat ride, or even try kayaking in the dam's waters.

  5. Day 2: Chembra Peak
    48 minutes (14.2 km) from Banasura Sagar Dam

    Chembra Peak is the highest peak in Wayanad and is a favorite among trekkers. The peak is a part of the Wayanad hill ranges and is located near Meppady. It takes around 3 hours to reach the peak, and the view from the top makes it all worth it. The striking view of the heart-shaped lake on top of the hill is an unequalled experience.

Useful Tips

If you have more time in hand, you can add visiting the Thirunelly temple, located in the Brahmagiri hills, to your itinerary. Additionally, the Kuruvadweep Island, situated on the Kabani river, is a perfect place for a lazy picnic with your family with its vast green landscapes and bamboo bridges. You may remove Wayanad Heritage Museum from the itinerary and also avoid trekking to Chembra peak if you have limited time in hand and want to add some extra activities to your schedule.
