Pondicherry: A 2-day Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Aurobindo Ashram

  2. Day 1: Pondicherry Museum

    The Pondicherry Museum, located in the former residence of a French military commander, contains an impressive collection of artifacts relating to the history of the region. Highlights include Bronze Age relics and statues from the Chola and Vijayanagara empires. The museum also features French colonial-era furniture and artwork. Admission is ten rupees for Indian nationals and one hundred rupees for foreigners.

  3. Day 1: Botanical Garden

    The Botanical Garden is a peaceful oasis in the heart of Pondicherry. Home to over 1500 species of plants, the garden features a collection of exotic trees, a Japanese rock garden, and a musical fountain. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll through the garden or sit on one of the benches and enjoy the tranquillity of nature.

  4. Day 2: Paradise Beach
    15 minutes (8 km) from Botanical Garden

    Paradise Beach is a secluded and serene beach located on the outskirts of Pondicherry. One needs to reach the Chunnambar Boat House, cross the backwater, and can take a ferry to reach the Beach, the journey in itself is thrilling and provides some breathtaking views. The Beach is a treat to the eyes, clean, and spacious. Visitors can opt to lay down and relax under Beach umbrellas or take a dip in the invigorating water. Also, boat rides and water sports facilities are available for the visitors to enjoy.

  5. Day 2: Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple
    20 minutes (5.2 km) from Paradise Beach

    The Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple is a popular Hindu temple located in the heart of Pondicherry. Built-in the 17th century, the temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The entrance of the temple is impressive, showcasing eleven forms of Lord Ganesha. Visitors can witness the unique Elephant Blessing ceremony, where Lord Ganesha blesses the visitors by touching their head with his trunk. It takes around half an hour to take the complete tour.

If you have more time, it's worth visiting Auroville, an experimental community and international township located just outside of Pondicherry. It's best to rent a scooter or hire a taxi to get there. For those interested in French colonial history, a visit to the French Quarter is a must. You can explore the picturesque streets and visit landmarks such as the Notre Dame des Anges church and the French War Memorial. If you have less time, you may choose to skip Botanical Garden or Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple to save time. Alternatively, you may extend your visit to Paradise Beach to soak up more sun and enjoy the water sports.
