Krishna's Butter Ball, a giant granite boulder, is an impressive sight that looks like it's defying gravity. It's also a popular background for photos. The Descent of Ganges, also known as Arjuna's Penance, is a giant relief carving and one of the largest open-air bas-reliefs in the world, depicting Hindu mythology. Be sure to bring hats and umbrellas to shield from the sun while going through the outdoor exhibits.
Pancha Rathas, meaning "Five Chariots," is an impressive rock-cut monument. Each of the five monolithic temples is carved to resemble a chariot, and they sit inside a walled compound. Shore Temple, situated by the sea, is a beautiful structural temple and a unique site in Mahabalipuram. Its built with granite stones stacked on top of each other without any binding material. The sand-covered compound makes for a relaxing walk, and the sea breeze is welcoming.
Relax and rejuvenate at Mahabalipuram Beach, where you can sunbathe, rent a boat, or enjoy seafood. For those interested in history, go to the Museum, which has a comprehensive collection of sculptures, including wood, metal, and stone.
If you have more time, we recommend visiting the Tiger's Cave, Alamparai Fort, or the Crocodile Bank. If you have less time, we suggest skipping the museum and spending more time relaxing on the beach or exploring the local shops and street food.
