Start your Sabah trip with some fun in the sun at Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. Comprising of five picturesque islands, you can pick and choose where to swim, snorkel or just lay on the gorgeous beaches. Get mesmerized by the crystal-clear waters and the marine life they hold, including various species of fish, sea turtles and even baby sharks. There are plenty of spots to have lunch and grab drinks, either on the sand or in the shade of the trees.
Get up early and head to the magnificent Kinabalu Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site which is full of rich and diverse flora and fauna. Take a guided nature walk and learn about the unique ecosystem and its importance. If hiking is on your mind, work up a sweat with a moderate hike to see the stunning waterfalls or take on a bigger challenge with the summit trek to Mount Kinabalu. After your adventure, taste the local delicacies and tea at Sabah Tea Gardens, located a short distance from the park.
Take a break from the outdoors and relax with the Kawa Kawa River Cruise, a tranquil and magical experience deep in the mangrove forest. Learn about the various species of monkeys, birds, and other wildlife in the area. You can take a dip in one of the refreshing and crystal-clear waterfalls along the way or just enjoy the peaceful views. Once you’re back, make sure to indulge in the delicious traditional Malay dishes on offer, including ethnic buffets and exotic snacks.
Experience the rich history, culture, and traditions of the indigenous ethnic groups at Mari Mari Cultural Village. You can witness the fire-making skills, watch bamboo cooking, and try some local delicacies. Enjoy a traditional dance performance or join in on some hands-on activities like blowpipe shooting or tattooing. You'll leave the village with new knowledge of the culture and the area, a deeper appreciation of the locals and their crafts, and new memories.
If you have more time, consider adding a trip to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where you can get a chance to see and learn about our primate cousins. For adventurous travellers, take a thrilling white-water rafting tour down Padas River or go scuba diving around Mabul Island. On the other hand, if you have less time, consider shortening your visit to Kinabalu Park or Kawa Kawa River Cruise. Remember to stay hydrated and wear comfortable clothes and shoes, especially if you're going to hike.
