Begin your trip with a visit to the Do-Drul Chorten Stupa, an important place of worship for the locals. This stupa is surrounded by 108 prayer wheels which many visitors spin as they make their way around the complex. The complex is beautifully landscaped and features a monastery, a small museum and a school of astrology.
On your second day in Gangtok, head over to the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology. This research center and museum houses a vast collection of Tibetan artifacts, including rare manuscripts, coins, and thangkas (traditional silk paintings). The institute also hosts seminars and courses on Tibetan language, culture and religion.
Take a day trip to the stunning Tsomgo Lake, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and lush greenery. This sacred glacial lake is revered by the locals and is believed to have healing properties. You can take a yak safari around the lake or enjoy a cup of hot tea by the lakeside.
End your trip with a visit to the Banjhakri Waterfalls, a picturesque waterfall surrounded by dense forests and a colorful landscaped garden. The park also has a small amphitheater where cultural programs are organized. Visitors can also enjoy rope bridge walking and other outdoor activities here.
If you have an extra day in Gangtok, you can explore Enchey Monastery, Tashi Viewpoint or the Flower Exhibition Centre. For foodies, try some local delicacies like momos, thukpa and gundruk soup. If you have less time, you can combine Do-Drul Chorten Stupa and Namgyal Institute of Tibetology on the same day, and skip Banjhakri Waterfalls. Remember to check weather conditions before visiting Tsomgo Lake, as it may be closed due to heavy snowfall or landslides in monsoon season.
