Auroville, the universally acclaimed universal town, is an extraordinary place that brings together people from all over the world to live, work and create in peace and harmony. Here, you can take a guided tour of the Matrimandir, a temple-like structure, and explore the onsite handicraft centres. You can end your day with a visit to the nearby Serenity Beach and enjoy the golden sands of the coastline.
Start your day by taking a walk along Promenade Beach, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Pondicherry. You can catch the sunrise, breathe in the fresh sea breeze, and watch local fishermen at work. After the beach, visit the Pondicherry Museum to learn about the French colonial history and the evolution of the city. The museum exhibits artefacts and sculptures from the Chola and Pallava dynasty, amongst others.
The Botanical Garden, spread across 22 acres, contains a wide range of exotic plants and trees, including various species of palm and eucalyptus trees. After the garden, head over to the Chunnambar Boat House, where you can go boating, kayaking or canoeing. If you have time, you can also explore Paradise Beach, which is only accessible by boat and is perfect for a relaxing afternoon picnic.
On your final day, visit the spiritual centres around the city, including Aurobindo Ashram, Sri Vedapureeswarar Temple, and Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. After a spiritual start to the day, head towards the Promenade shopping district. With many quaint shops selling unique handmade crafts, perfumes, and leather goods, get ready to bargain hard for souvenirs for your loved ones back home!
If you have more time, you can visit the Gingee Fort, which is about 70 km from the city. You can also opt for a day trip to Mahabalipuram, which is about 100 km from Pondicherry. Don't forget to carry sunscreen, hats and water bottles while exploring the city. If you have less time, you can skip the museum and spend more time at the beach or the spiritual centres.
