The Elephanta Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage site and a group of rock-cut temples. One of the largest cave temples in the country, these temple ruins are dedicated to the Hindu god, Lord Shiva. The Elephanta Caves have an intriguing story that dates back to the 7th century AD, making them a must-visit cultural experience. To reach the caves, take a ferry ride from the Gateway of India, which is around 1 hour in transit time.
Kanheri Caves are located in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and are a group of rock-cut monuments and caves that are again dedicated to Lord Shiva. These caves were once home to thousands of Buddhist monks living in a monastery complex. Visitors can explore the 109 caves and their carvings, inscriptions, art, and sculptures depicting the life of Buddha. Also, take a nature walk through the forest of the national park to make your visit even more adventurous.
