Start your day by visiting one of Chennai's oldest and most prominent temples. The Dravidian-style architecture, intricate carvings and vivid colours of the gopuram (entrance tower), and the vibrant atmosphere of the temple are sure to leave you mesmerized. Don't miss the opportunity to try the temple's famous prasadam - sweet pongal and puliyodharai – a traditional South-Indian dish made with rice.
The next stop on your journey is the Government Museum. Housing over 42 galleries that display an eclectic mix of art, archaeology, anthropology, and numismatics, this museum is a testament to the opulent history and culture of Tamil Nadu. Don't miss the Bronze Gallery, which holds unique sculptures from the Chola period, and the National Art Gallery, which displays a vast collection of Indian art, ranging from miniature paintings to modern art.
For a truly authentic south Indian lunch, stop by Murugan Idli Shop. Their fluffy, steaming idlis, crisp vadas and hot sambar are enough to fill anyone up. Be sure to also sample their delicious chutneys, which are served unlimited throughout your meal.
A true Chennai landmark, Fort St. George was built by the British in 1644 and was one of the first establishments of the East India Company. A guided tour of the fort, the museum and the St. Mary's Church will give you some insights into the history of Chennai and the country. The fort also houses secretariat and assembly buildings, which are the administrative headquarters of the Tamil Nadu government.
A trip to Chennai is not complete without a visit to India's second-longest urban natural beach - the Marina Beach. Take a leisurely stroll along the promenade, watching the endless waves of the Bay of Bengal and relishing street food from the vendors dotting the beach. Don't forget to pause for a photo with the iconic lighthouse or the beautiful Gandhi statue that adorns the beach.
You can extend your visit to the Government Museum by visiting the nearby Connemara Public Library and the National Art Gallery, which are located within walking distance. If you have more time, drive around the city for some shopping and to explore some of the local cafes and restaurants. If time is short, you can drop the visit to the Government Museum and replace it with a trip to the Arignar Anna Zoological Park or the Mahabalipuram UNESCO heritage site.
