The Karapuzha Dam is a popular tourist spot in the Wayanad district. It is located on the Karapuzha River and is surrounded by lush green hills. You can enjoy a picturesque view of the dam's backwaters and the Banasura Sagar Dam from here. The dam also offers boating facilities in the reservoir.
The Banasura Sagar Dam is the largest earthen dam in India and the second-largest in Asia. The view of the dam's surrounding hills covered in mist is breathtakingly beautiful. You can take a speedboat or a pedal boat ride in the dam's reservoir. The dam is also the starting point for the trek to the Banasura Peak.
The Edakkal Caves are a group of natural caves that have ancient petroglyphs dating back to the Stone Age. They are located on the Ambukutty Mala, a hill formation in the Wayanad district. You have to trek up the hill to reach the caves. The view from the caves is spectacular, and the carvings on the rocks are fascinating.
Soochipara Falls is a three-tiered waterfall located in the Vellarimala mountain range. You have to trek through the dense forest to reach the falls. The first tier of the falls is easily accessible, and you can take a dip in the pool at the bottom of the falls. The second and the third tiers are more challenging to reach but are worth the effort.
If you have more time, you can visit the Pookode Lake, located 20 minutes from Kalpetta. The lake is surrounded by lush greenery and is an excellent spot for a picnic. Another alternative is the Chembra Peak, located 45 minutes from Kalpetta. The peak offers a panoramic view of the district, and the trek to the top takes around three hours. If you have less time, you can skip either the Karapuzha Dam or the Soochipara Falls.
