The Brihadeeswarar Temple, also known as the Big Temple, is a UNESCO-listed heritage site and is considered one of the finest examples of Chola architecture. The temple was built during the reign of Raja Raja Chola I in the 11th century and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The main attraction is the 216 feet high Vimana which is made out of a single granite rock. Visitors are advised to reach the temple early in the morning to beat the crowds and take in the serenity of the temple.
Located within the premises of the Thanjavur Palace, Saraswathi Mahal Library is one of the oldest and most important libraries in India. The library houses an extensive collection of ancient Indian manuscripts, paintings, and books in various languages like Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Marathi. Visitors can also find palm leaf manuscripts, rare books and imperial records of the Nayak and Maratha dynasties. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the premises.
Originally built by the Nayaks during the 16th century, the Thanjavur Royal Palace has been the residence of the royal family and the rulers of Thanjavur. The Palace complex houses the Palace museum, which exhibits the rich cultural heritage and history of Thanjavur, including intricate ivory works, authentic Tanjore paintings, and other important artifacts. Visitors can also explore the Ganesha temple, the Durbar hall, the Royal Palace garden, and the Bell Tower.
The Schwartz Church, also known as the Christ Church, was built in the year 1779 by Raja Serfoji II for Reverend C.V. Schwartz as a tribute to his service to the Thanjavur Maratha kingdom. The church's architecture is a blend of European and Tamil styles, and houses a beautiful collection of brass plaques that convey the Bible story in Tamil. Visitors can explore the peaceful garden and the cemetery where the Reverend and other British soldiers are buried.
The Thanjavur Art Gallery is located on the ground floor of the Nayak Durbar Hall and houses an impressive collection of sculptures, artifacts and paintings that reflect the rich cultural heritage of Thanjavur. The gallery is home to several rare paintings, including the works of Raja Ravi Varma, and also showcases traditional Tanjore paintings made with gold and precious stones. Visitors can purchase authentic handicrafts and souvenirs from the adjoining shopping complex.
