Katra is the base camp for Vaishnodevi which is located at the foothills. Spend your first day exploring this bustling town and visit the India's largest wax museum - Madame Tussauds.
Starting from Katra, embark on the Vaishnodevi Yatra. The 12 km trek will take you through scenic routes with several pit-stops offering medical facilities and refreshments. The main attraction is the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi, located at an altitude of 5200 ft, which is considered the most significant shrine for devotees of the goddess.
Around 30 minutes from Bhawan, visit Adhkunwari, a mystical cave that is believed to be the place where the goddess hid from Bhairav Nath for nine months. The cave houses the rock form of the goddess where she was meditating.
The next stop on the itinerary is the Bhairavnath Temple, dedicated to the demon Bhairav Nath. It is believed that the yatra is not complete until pilgrims visit this temple. The temple's architecture is a blend of Mughal and south Indian styles and is surrounded by lush greenery.
On your last day, visit Sanjichhat, which offers panoramic views of the valley, and is the midpoint of the yatra. Next up, drive to Jhajjar Kotli, which is a natural waterfall, located amidst forested hills and is a perfect spot for picnicking with the family.
Make sure to carry your ID card and enough water bottles during the trek. Try to start the yatra early in the morning. Pilgrims can book helicopter tickets in advance for Vaishno Devi Darshan. For a more relaxed trip, spend a night at the temple in-between the trek.
