Start your Salzburg adventure at Schloss Hellbrunn, a family-friendly palace with trick fountains and beautiful gardens. Wander through the maze and explore the many hidden water features. Your children will love getting spray by the unexpected splashes. Next, drive 10 minutes to the Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of Europe's largest medieval castles. Take a funicular ride up to the top and enjoy the panoramic views of the city. Inside the fortress walls, explore the medieval chambers, try on medieval costumes and check out the Fortress Museum.
Start your day at the Salzburger Zoo, located near the stunning Hellbrunn Palace. The zoo is home to over 1,200 animals, including lions, tigers, and bears. Be sure to catch the daily seal show and the bird of prey demonstration. Next, take a short drive to the Mirabell Palace and Gardens, where you can explore the beautiful Baroque gardens and let the kids run around the hedge maze. In the palace, marvel at the stunning Marble Hall and see where the Von Trapp children sang "Do Re Mi" in the movie, The Sound of Music.
If you have more time, consider a visit to the Mozart House and Museum, where you can see Mozart's original instruments and clothing. Or, take a leisurely stroll through the charming streets of Salzburg Old Town, stopping at cafes and boutiques along the way.
If you have less time, you can skip the Salzburger Zoo and Mirabell Palace and Gardens on Day 2 and spend more time exploring Salzburg Old Town. There are plenty of museums, restaurants and cafes in the area to keep you busy for the day.
