Upon arriving in Kochi, head straight to the Fort Kochi area and explore its unique blend of Dutch, Portuguese, and British architecture. Walk along the iconic Chinese Fishing Nets and take a boat ride to see the historic St. Francis Church, India's oldest European-built church. In the afternoon, visit the Mattancherry Palace, also known as the Dutch Palace, which houses some of the best-frescoed ceilings in India.
Start the day early and drive to Alleppey, known as the "Venice of the East" for its extensive network of backwaters and canals. Take a leisurely houseboat ride and observe the local way of life, including toddy tapping, prawn farming, and coir-making. Visit the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary to catch a glimpse of migratory birds such as Siberian cranes and teal ducks. End the day by watching a mesmerizing Kathakali performance, a traditional dance drama of Kerala.
If you have more time, consider adding a visit to the Periyar National Park in Thekkady to see Indian elephants, tigers, and panthers. For a more relaxing pace, plan for an extra day in Alleppey to enjoy its quiet beaches.
If you have less time, skip Alleppey and spend an extra day in Kochi to visit the Jewish Synagogue and its antique shops, as well as the traditional Kathakali and Kalaripayattu Center for a demonstration of martial arts or puppetry.
