Two-Day Madurai Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Meenakshi Amman Temple

    The Meenakshi Amman Temple is one of the biggest and most famous temples in India. It is dedicated to Goddess Parvati and is considered a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture. The temple complex consists of four massive gopurams (pyramidal gate towers) and twelve tall and ornate gopurams that are intricately carved with Hindu deities. Visitors can offer pooja and witness the daily evening ceremony and light the lamp called Eluntharuli Malaikku.

  2. Day 1: Gandhi Memorial Museum

    Located in the heart of the city, the Gandhi Memorial Museum was built in memory of Mahatma Gandhi. The museum displays a collection of exhibits and photographs related to India's struggle for independence and Gandhi's life. There are around 14 galleries in the museum with artefacts such as Gandhi’s original dhoti, some shots of Indian freedom fighters, letters written between Gandhiji and various leaders, etc. If you are a patriot at heart, you will love this museum.

  3. Day 1: Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace

    The Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace is a 17th-century palace that was built by King Thirumalai Nayak during his reign in 1636. The palace was divided into two parts – the Swargavilasa and the Rangavilasa. The Swargavilasa is now in ruins, but the Rangavilasa is still intact. The palace is a perfect example of Indo-Saracenic style architecture. The palace is famous for its grandeur and for its finely carved domes and pillars.

  4. Day 2: Mariamman Teppakulam

    Mariamman Teppakulam is a beautiful temple pond located in the heart of Madurai. During the annual Teppam festival (float festival), idols from the Meenakshi Amman Temple are taken on a tour around the pond on a colourful float. It is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike and is surrounded by a lush garden. It is undoubtedly a tranquil getaway from the city.

  5. Day 2: Alagar Kovil
    45 minutes (21.2 km) from Mariamman Teppakulam

    The Alagar Kovil is a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is situated on a hilltop and can be reached by climbing a flight of 300 steps. The temple is known for its scenic beauty and magnificent architecture. The main attraction of the temple is the beautiful idol of Lord Vishnu which is made up of precious stones and metals. It is the perfect temple for a serene getaway and for some soulful meditation.

If you have more time to spare, you can visit the Koodal Azhagar Temple, Pazhamudir Solai, and the Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam. If you want to indulge in some shopping, you can visit Puthu Mandapam, a famous market near the Meenakshi temple. However, since this is a 2-day itinerary, it is better to stick with the above-mentioned locations. It is also essential to carry water bottles and comfortable shoes as the temperature can be quite hot and the temples can involve extensive walking.
