Horton Plains National Park is a protected area in the central highlands, covered by montane grassland and cloud forest. It's home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including some endemic species such as the Horton Plains slender loris. You'll be mesmerized by the panoramic views from World's End, a sheer precipice of over 870m that provides an amazing bird's eye view of the tea estates below. Trek to Baker's Fall, an impressive 20 meter waterfall that takes up to one hour to visit. Please note that only 750 visitors are allowed in the park daily.
Kithulgala is the perfect place for adrenaline junkies to experience white water rafting in Sri Lanka. The Kelani River offers some thrilling rapids ranging from grade 2 to 3+. You'll be thrilled by its twists, turns, and drops as well as appreciate the surrounding beautiful landscapes. You'll be provided with safety equipment and instructions to be safe throughout the trip. The route ranges from 5-7 kilometers and takes approximately 2 hours to complete. Along the way, you'll pass through mountain ranges, rainforests, and tea plantations.
Adam's Peak, also known as Sri Pada, is a conical mountain of 2,243 meters high. The mountain is a pilgrimage site for many religions because it's believed to hold the footprint of Buddha. The trail takes around 6 hours to complete and features magnificent views from the summit of the surrounding peaks and the panorama of the valleys. The trail is separated into five sections, including thousands of steps and some slightly steep ascents. It's recommended to start the hike at 2 a.m. to arrive at the summit at sunrise, which is a remarkable and awe-inspiring experience.
If you have more time, you could add tea factory tours, which are available throughout the Nuwara Eliya region. If you have less time, consider skipping the white water rafting trip, which is the most time consuming activity on the list. However, it is recommended to follow at least half of the routes as the paths can be challenging and dangerous if not done carefully. Don't forget to pack enough water, snacks, warm and waterproof clothes, and always check the weather forecast before going.
