Escape the bustling city by visiting the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, a lush green paradise within Mumbai’s city limits. The park is home to several hiking trails, lakes and waterfalls. Take a walking tour with a local guide or rent a bicycle and cycle around the beautiful forest. If lucky, spot some rare birds, deer, and leopards in their natural habitat. Make sure to visit the Kanheri Caves, a group of ancient rock-cut Buddhist caves, which offer a glimpse of India's rich cultural heritage. Do carry enough water and food, as there are limited options inside the park.
Unwind on the second day with a visit to the Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on Elephanta Island. A short boat ride from the Gateway of India will take you to the rock-cut temples carved between 450 AD and 750 AD. Marvel at the intricate carvings and sculptures depicting Hindu mythology, including the famous Trimurti, a three-headed sculpture representing the cosmic energies of creation, preservation, and destruction. Exclusive hawkers, restaurants and cafes are available for exploration on the island.
If you have more time, you can visit the famous Siddhivinayak Temple, a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha, or relax at Juhu Beach. For those interested in history and culture, make sure to visit the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and the Prince of Wales Museum. If you have less time, skip the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and spend more time at Elephanta Caves. Make sure to carry enough water and sunscreen during your excursions, and keep an eye on your belongings while out and about.
