Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary is a serene and peaceful place, perfect for nature lovers who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Spread over 2.74 hectares of land, it is home to around 200 species of birds, including some rare and endangered species. In addition to birdwatching, visitors can also spot butterflies, dragonflies and other insects. There are few benches to sit and relax, and the park is ideal for a leisurely stroll.
Athirappilly Waterfalls, located in the Sholayar forest range is a breathtaking sight and the largest waterfall in Kerala. The falls drop from a height of 80 feet, and the surrounding lush green forests make it a perfect setting for nature enthusiasts. Visitors can trek through the jungle, take a dip in the pool formed by the waterfall, and enjoy the serene natural beauty around them.
A visit to Kerala Backwaters is a must-do on any nature lover's list when in Kochi. The serene backwaters encompassing canals, lagoons and lakes are best experienced by a boat ride through the Alleppey-Kumarakom route. The experience is soothing, where you'll be surrounded by green rice paddies, coconut trees and the sound of birds chirping. The ride also allows visitors to see the villages and daily life of the people living here.
If you have more time, you can replace Kerala Backwaters with a visit to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, located around 180 km from Kochi. This sanctuary is home to a variety of wildlife, including tigers, elephants, and different species of primates. If you have less time, you can spend a few hours exploring the Hill Palace Museum, located 10 km from the city center. It is a beautiful building housing a vast collection of antique items, including paintings, sculptures, and artifacts.
