A visit to Athirapally Waterfalls, the largest and most famous waterfall in Kerala and a popular shooting location for Indian movies, is an exciting way to start your Kerala trip. Located in the Sholayar Range of the Western Ghats, the waterfall is surrounded by lush green forests and is a spectacular sight to behold. You can trek to the base of the waterfall and feel the misty spray on your face, making it a refreshing experience. You can also visit the nearby Vazhachal Falls, which is often referred to as the twin sister of Athirapally.
Next up on the itinerary is a visit to the heritage sites of Kochi, which will take you back in time. Start by visiting the Mattancherry Palace, also known as the Dutch Palace, built by the Portuguese in 1555. It has a fine collection of murals depicting Indian mythology, portraits of the rulers of Kochi, and exhibits of royal belongings. Then, head to the Jewish Synagogue, the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth of Nations, decorated with exquisite Chinese tiles and Belgian chandeliers. Finally, visit the St. Francis Church, the oldest European church in India, and take a stroll along the Fort Kochi Beach.
A visit to Alleppey is incomplete without a backwater tour. Experience Kerala's rural life, lush paddy fields, coconut groves, and watch traditional fishermen at work as you cruise through the serene backwaters on a houseboat. You can take a day tour or choose to stay overnight on the houseboat. Savor local delicacies like karimeen fry (pearl spot fish fry) and appam (rice pancake) with stew as you take in the beautiful surroundings.
Kerala is known for its pristine beaches, and Kovalam Beach is one of its most popular ones. Located in Thiruvananthapuram, it offers a serene ambiance, a long coastline, and picturesque views. Take a dip in the Arabian Sea, sunbathe, or indulge in adventure sports like parasailing, jet skiing, or surfing. Visit the nearby lighthouse and enjoy the panoramic view of the sea and the coast.
If you have more time, you can visit Munnar, a hill station known for its tea plantations, and Thekkady, a wildlife sanctuary. If you have less time, you can skip the Kochi heritage tour and head straight to Alleppey for an overnight houseboat stay.
