Vathy is the capital of Ithaca and is worth exploring for its charming narrow streets, old churches, and waterfront taverns. You can also visit the Archaeological Museum of Ithaca to see a collection of artifacts discovered on the island, including ancient coins and pottery.
Filiatro Beach is a long pebble beach with crystal-clear waters, surrounded by greenery. You can swim, relax on the beach, and enjoy lunch at the nearby restaurant. If you're feeling more adventurous, there's also a diving center nearby where you can explore the underwater world of Ithaca.
The Cave of Loizos is a natural cave with impressive stalactites and stalagmites. It's said to be the cave where the nymphs of Homer's Odyssey lured the hero Odysseus with their singing. A guided tour of the cave lasts about an hour.
Gidaki Beach is a secluded beach accessible by boat or a 10-minute walk down a steep path. The walk is worth it though, as you'll be rewarded with a peaceful and pristine beach surrounded by cliffs and turquoise waters. Bring a picnic or grab something from the food truck at the entrance.
The Monastery of Kathara is a Byzantine monastery located on the highest peak of Ithaca. The hike up to the monastery takes about an hour and is rewarded with stunning views of the island and the Ionian Sea. The monastery itself is peaceful and offers a glimpse into the religious history of Ithaca.
If you have more time, consider adding a day trip to nearby Kefalonia island. Alternatively, if you have less time, you can skip the Cave of Loizos or the Monastery of Kathara. Keep in mind that many restaurants and shops in Ithaca close during the afternoon and reopen in the evening, so plan accordingly.
