Thiruvanamalai Nature Lovers Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Arunachaleswarar Temple
Located in the heart of Thiruvanamalai

Begin your day with a visit to this historic temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. This grand temple has nine gateways and five prakarams. It is the home of one of the five elements, "fire", which is represented by the Annamalaiyar Lingam. You can participate in puja ceremonies and also witness the grand Girivalam, which involves circling around Arunachala hill on foot.

  2. Day 2: Gingee Fort
1 hour 30 minutes (61 km) from Thiruvanamalai

This 800-year-old fort is also known as the "Troy of the East", as it has been fought over by many rulers. It is set on three hills and surrounded by a moat. Climb up to the top to witness breathtaking views of the countryside. The fort has three main sections - the upper fort, the Krishnagiri fort and the Rajagiri fort. You can spend an entire day exploring this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  3. Day 3: Pichavaram Mangrove Forest
2 hours 40 minutes (129 km) from Gingee Fort

This is one of the largest mangrove forests in India, consisting of over 50 islands and 4000 canals. Take a boat ride through the mangroves, and spot a variety of birds, animals and marine life. It's best to visit during the winter months, when migratory birds flock to the area.

  4. Day 4: Yelagiri Hills
3 hours (148 km) from Pichavaram Mangrove Forest

Escape the heat and head to the Yelagiri Hills. Enjoy a trek to Swamimalai Hill, which offers stunning views of the landscape. You can also visit the Jalagamparai Waterfalls, which are best visited during the monsoon season. Relax and unwind at the Punganoor Lake Park, and take a dip in the cool waters of the lake.
