Transportation
When traveling between cities, consider taking the famous bullet train or shinkansen, which can be reserved in advance. When traveling within cities, consider using the efficient public transportation systems, including subway and buses. Taxis are also available but can be quite expensive. A Pasmo or Suica card can help make traveling by public transportation easier and more convenient. As for transportation costs, be prepared to spend an average of $10-$20 per day per person.
Useful Tips
If you have more time, consider adding a day trip to the historic city of Kamakura, visiting the iconic Great Buddha Statue and the Hasedera Temple. If you have less time, consider skipping Osaka and Nara and spending more time in Tokyo and Kyoto. It's also a good idea to learn a few basic Japanese phrases before traveling to Japan as not everyone speaks English. Lastly, don't forget to try some of Japan's delicious street food and snacks, including sushi, ramen, and mochi.
Airports
Narita International Airport (NRT) is located 60 kilometers outside of Tokyo and is the main gateway for international flights. Haneda International Airport (HND) is located closer to central Tokyo and operates many domestic flights as well as international flights. Kansai International Airport (KIX) is the main airport serving the Kansai region, including Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara, and is located on an island in Osaka Bay. It is approximately one hour away from Osaka by train and 90 minutes away from Kyoto by bus.
