Explore the charming waterfront of Fort Kochi and watch the Chinese fishing nets in action. Visit the beautifully preserved St. Francis Church, which dates back to the 16th century and was where Vasco da Gama was buried before his remains were taken to Portugal. Walk through the winding streets of Jew Town and shop for souvenirs, spices and antique items.
Take a jeep safari in the Periyar National Park, home to elephants, tigers, wild boars and other animals. Enjoy a boat ride on the serene Periyar Lake and take a guided nature walk. If you have time, visit the nearby spice gardens to learn about the cultivation of spices like cardamom, black pepper and cinnamon.
Relax on the sandy beaches of Varkala, which is known for its stunning cliffs, sparkling sea and soothing mineral springs. Swim, surf or sunbathe, and visit the nearby Janardhanaswamy Temple, which is believed to be more than 2,000 years old. Indulge in some Ayurvedic spa treatments, try some fresh seafood at the beach shacks and catch a glorious sunset.
Take a leisurely walk or go on a boat ride through the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, which covers an area of 14 acres and is home to more than 180 species of birds, including the kingfisher, woodpecker, egret and stork. Observe the flora and fauna, and look for exotic birds like the Siberian crane, which migrates here every year from Russia. You can also visit Kumarakom Backwaters and indulge in some watersports like kayaking and water skiing.
Visit the imposing Bekal Fort, which was built in the 17th century by the ruler Shivappa Nayaka of Keladi. Walk along the ramparts and take in the stunning views of the Arabian Sea. Visit the nearby Bekal Beach, which is a popular spot for swimming and picnicking. You can also visit the Ananthapura Lake Temple, which is the only lake temple in Kerala and is believed to date back to the 9th century.
