Begin your trip to Aattapadu by visiting the historic Fort Kochi. This area has a rich Portuguese, Dutch and British heritage, which is reflected in its impressive architecture. Start with a stroll along the seaside promenade, Fort Kochi Beach, and soak in the views. Make sure to also visit the iconic Chinese fishing nets, which are used by fishermen to this day. Before leaving, stop at the St. Francis Church, the oldest European church in India.
Take a short drive to Mattancherry Palace, also known as the Dutch Palace. This palace was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century but was later renovated by the Dutch. Admire the intricate murals and learn about the history behind each room. Don't miss the room dedicated to Krishna, which has some of the most beautiful murals in the palace.
Next, take a short drive to Jew Town, a vibrant market street in the heart of Mattancherry. Walk along the street and take in the colorful shops and buildings. Don't miss the Paradesi Synagogue, which is located in Jew Town. This historic synagogue is the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth of Nations.
On the second day, venture out of the city and embark on a trek to Meenmutty Waterfalls. This stunning waterfall is located in the Wayanad district and is surrounded by lush green forest. The trek to the waterfalls is considered moderately difficult and takes about 45 minutes to complete. Once you reach the falls, take a dip in the refreshing water and marvel at the natural beauty around you.
After your trek, visit the Banasura Sagar Dam, which is the largest earthen dam in India. This breathtaking structure is surrounded by rolling green hills and is an impressive feat of engineering. Take a boat ride on the dam's reservoir and soak in the views. You can also go on a short trek around the dam and discover more of its beauty.
If you have more time, consider taking a day trip to Munnar, a breathtaking hill station known for its tea plantations. Alternatively, if you have less time, skip Meenmutty Waterfalls and spend more time exploring Fort Kochi and Jew Town.
