Start your first day in Pondicherry with a visit to the Promenade Beach, one of the most popular beaches in the city. Take a leisurely stroll along the beach or relax under the shade of one of the trees lining the promenade. The beachside cafes are ideal for a late breakfast or early lunch, with views of the ocean and cool breezes making for a perfect setting. Take in the sea-facing French War Memorial and the Old Lighthouse, both of which offer majestic views of the Bay of Bengal.
Head out to Auroville, a township founded in 1968 with the purpose of bringing together people of different nationalities and faiths. The community now numbers around 2500 people with a large number being international residents. The township is designed around sustainability, preserving nature, and human unity. Spend the day exploring the gorgeous Matri Mandir with a walk through the Inner and Outer Paths. The Matri Mandir is a geodesic dome-shaped structure that serves as the spiritual and meditation center of Auroville. Take a trip to the nearby Auroville Bakery that offers a range of freshly baked goods and organic produce. You can also visit the boutique stores selling handicrafts, textiles produced by the community. In the evening, head over to the Visitor's Center to learn more about Auroville's history and life in the community.
Pondicherry has no airport, and the nearest one, Chennai Airport, is a three-hour drive away. If you have more time, explore the town's vibrant nightlife, which offers a unique experience, or go on a culinary adventure exploring local eateries. If you have less time, skip the Auroville Bakery trip and head directly to the Matri Mandir, which is the highlight of Auroville. You can also rent a bike or a car to explore the city on your own during your stay. Don't forget to carry your sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes.
