Begin your nature adventure in Wayanad by hiking the Chembra Peak, the highest peak in the region at 2,100 meters. The trek through the lush green tea estates and dense forests takes around 4 hours and offers stunning views of the Wayanadu hills. Once you reach the top, take in the breathtaking views of the heart-shaped lake. One needs to take permission from the forest department before the trek and the trek is closed during monsoon season (June-September).
Spend your second day exploring the Edakkal Caves, an ancient cave system that dates back to 5000 BCE. The caves are located at an altitude of 1200m above sea level and take a 20-minute climb to reach. The caves feature petroglyphs (prehistoric rock carvings) that offer insights into the region's ancient civilization. An audio guide is available at the entrance to provide insights and historical information.
If you have more time, add a visit to the Meenmutty Falls for a refreshing dip in the natural pool. If you have less time, skip the Edakkal Caves and spend the second day exploring the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary, home to various animal species like elephants, tigers, and peacocks.
