Two-Day Itinerary for Pondichery

  1. Day 1: Promenade Beach
    10 minutes (2.4 km) from the Aurobindo Ashram

    Starting the trip with the picturesque Promenade Beach, a 1.5 km long stretch of sand surrounded by palm trees. Enjoy the sea breeze and take a stroll or rent a bicycle to explore the area. There are plenty of shops and restaurants nearby to get refreshments. Do not miss the 27-meter tall statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the beach. Only open from 5 am to 7:30 am and 5 pm to 8 pm so plan accordingly

  2. Day 1: Aurobindo Ashram
    5 minutes (1.2 km) from the Promenade Beach

    Next stop is the Aurobindo Ashram, founded in 1926 and named after its founder Sri Aurobindo. The ashram consists of several buildings which includes the main ashram building and the Samadhi. Learn about the teachings and philosophies behind this spiritual community. The ashram closes at 6 pm.

  3. Day 1: Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
    8 minutes (1.9 km) from Aurobindo Ashram

    Visit the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a beautiful church built in the Gothic style in the early 20th century. The stained glass windows are a must-see. Please note that there are dress code restrictions, so dress appropriately. The church closes at 6 pm.

  4. Day 1: Pondicherry Museum
    9 minutes (2.1 km) from the Basilica

    Head to the Pondicherry Museum, which displays a wide range of exhibits showcasing the history and culture of Pondicherry, including artefacts from the Chola and Pallava dynasties. However, the museum closes at 5 pm, so plan accordingly.

  5. Day 2: Matrimandir
    45 minutes (10.3 km) from Pondicherry Museum

    Begin day two by visiting the Matrimandir at Auroville, also known as the Temple of the Mother. This beautiful spiritual center was built to represent the human soul's aspiration to attain perfection. It is a fascinating site that is sure to inspire and uplift you. Remember to book your entry in advance.

  6. Day 2: Chunnambar Boat House
    20 minutes (8.9 km) from Matrimandir

    Next stop, Chunnambar Boat House, a lush green area that lies between the Chunnambar River and the Bay of Bengal. Enjoy the tranquillity of boating through the mangrove forests and backwaters surround this place. The boating closes at 5 pm so plan accordingly.

  7. Day 2: Puducherry Botanical Gardens
    20 minutes (8 km) from Chunnambar Boat House

    Finish off the trip with a visit to the Puducherry Botanical Gardens. The Gardens have a variety of exotic plants, herbs and trees, a Toy Train runs around the property, also visit a Aquarium inside the garden, a perfect place for nature lovers. The gardens close at 5 pm.
