Two-Day Itinerary for Wayanad

  1. Day 1: Edakkal Caves
    1 hour and 20 minutes (36 km) from Calicut International Airport

    Discover the prehistoric Edakkal Caves, famous for the rock carvings that date back to 6000 BC. The caves are situated at an altitude of 1200 meters and require a moderate hike of about 45 minutes. Once on top, the view from the entrance, the serene ambiance and the beautiful surroundings will leave you mesmerized. There is also a prehistoric museum to explore near the entrance.

  2. Day 1: Soochipara Falls
    1 hour and 15 minutes (29 km) from Edakkal Caves

    Soochipara falls, also known as Sentinel Rock Waterfalls is a treat to your eyes. Reach the parking spot and a 20-minute walk through the tea plantations, crossing a wooden bridge over the stream will take you to the waterfall. The water falls from a height of 200 meters and the sight and sound is just spectacular. The pool below the waterfalls is ideal for swimming and has been cordoned off for safety reasons.

  3. Day 1: Banasura Sagar Dam
    1hour and 15 minutes (26 km) from Soochipara Waterfalls

    Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India, is another attraction in Wayanad. The pristine waters surrounded by the Banasura hills offer a breathtaking view. Visitors can opt for a speed boat or a pedal boat and explore the mini islands formed by the submerging of land during the monsoons. A small hike uphill takes you to the hanging bridge that offers a panoramic view of the backwaters and the hills.

  4. Day 2: Pookode Lake
    1 hour (30 km) from Kalpetta

    Pookode Lake is a fresh water lake surrounded by green verdant forest. A walk through the lush green forest and a boat ride on the serene lake can be quite relaxing and rejuvenating. The lake is full of fishes and they can be fed with packets of fish food available on the counter. It's a lovely spot for photography enthusiasts.

  5. Day 2: Lakkidi View Point
    20 minutes (5 km) from Pookode Lake

    Lakkidi Viewpoint is one of the most sought-after viewpoints in Kerala. The winding ghat road leading to Lakkidi offers breathtaking scenic views. The view from the top is simply spectacular. The valley is covered with lush green forests and the winding roads offer a birds-eye view. The mist and fog that covers the valley only adds to the charm and beauty of the place.

  6. Day 2: Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
    35 minutes (11 km) from Lakkidi View Point

    Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is a must-see for nature lovers. This sanctuary has a variety of animals and birds that includes tigers, leopards, Indian bison, elephants, and more. A jeep safari will take you through parts of this sanctuary where you can spot many animals in their natural habitat. The sanctuary is home to some rare and endangered species of plants and animals.

Useful Tips

If you have more time, visit the Meenmutty Falls which are located around 30 km from Kalpetta. It falls from a height of more than 800 feet and is the second-largest waterfall in Wayanad. Also, the Chain Tree located near Lakkidi View Point has an interesting story behind it and is worth a visit. If you are a foodie, you can try out the local cuisine at the Hotel Haritagiri in Kalpetta. If you have less time, you can skip the Banasura Sagar Dam and Pookode Lake, as both offer similar experiences as Soochipara Falls. Also, plan well in advance, and avoid the rainy season as some of the places might be closed due to heavy rains and flooding.
