Start the day early and head out to the Edakkal Caves. A prehistoric rock shelter that holds carvings dating back more than 5000 years, this place is a must-visit for history buffs and nature lovers alike. The thrilling hike to reach the top is a bonus for adventure seekers. After a refreshing breakfast, make your way to the Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad. The trek can take up to three hours but the panoramic view of the picturesque surroundings and heart-shaped lake makes it worth the effort. Complete the trek before noon to avoid the afternoon crowd and heat.
Begin the day with a visit to the Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings, go boating or simply soak up the sun. The next stop of the day is the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is home to a variety of animals such as elephants, tigers, leopards, deer and langurs. Book a jeep safari or guided trek to see the animals in their natural habitats. The sanctuary also houses the famous Tholpetty and Muthanga wildlife reserves.
If you have an extra day, add a visit to the Neelimala Viewpoint for breathtaking views of the Western Ghats. For those with limited time, skip the trek to Chembra Peak and opt for a visit to the Meenmutty Waterfalls instead. Make sure to carry sufficient water, snacks, and comfortable trekking shoes for all the treks.
