Two-Day Zermatt Switzerland Itinerary

  • Day 1: Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
    20 minutes (8 km) from town center

    Begin your journey with a visit to the highest cable car station in Europe. Enjoy panoramic views of the Matterhorn and the surrounding Alps as you traverse up the mountain. You can also visit the glacier palace and see ice sculptures, go to the cinema lounge and relax in the world's highest cinema, or indulge in some cuisine at the restaurant.

  • Day 2: Gornergrat
    30 minutes (9 km) from town center

    Explore the famous Gornergrat where you will take a scenic train ride and admire the beautiful views of the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa, which is the second-highest peak in Switzerland. Once you're at the top, you can further take a hike, quad biking or only take a few photos of the world-famous Matterhorn.

Transportation

Getting around Zermatt is very pedestrian-friendly as the town is car-free. You may walk to the point of interest, hire a bicycle or taxis are available, but to save money, it's recommended to bring a comfortable pair of walking shoes. If arriving by public transportation, you should purchase your tickets before boarding the trains, and taxi rides usually require cash.

Useful tips

If you have more time, you can explore the beautiful town of Zermatt, visit The Matterhorn Museum, which tells the 150-year long history of the town and the stories of the Matterhorn climbs. Then take a stroll after dinner around Bahnhofstrasse or discover some bars for a drink or two; all bars and clubs are settled in the town center.

If you have less time, select one activity, either Matterhorn Glacier Paradise or Gornergrat, and further discover the beautiful village of Zermatt.

Airports

Zermatt doesn't have its airport. The nearest airport is Sion Airport, SIR, located 77.3 km away from the town center. The approximate travel time by car is 1 hour, and by train, it takes nearly 2 hours. Alternatively, Geneva Airport GVA, and Zurich Airport ZRH, are both located about three and a half hours drive away from Zermatt.
