Alleppey Backwaters is the prime attraction of Alleppey that is famous for its serene nature, scenic beauty, and a glorious history. The iconic canals and lagoons covered with tall coconut trees and mangroves paint a refreshing picture. A backwater ride in a houseboat, shikara or canoe is the best way to witness the splendor of backwaters. Vembanad Lake, the largest lake in Kerala, is also a part of Alleppey Backwaters. The guests are able to enjoy various activities including kayaking, fishing, crab spotting, and sunset watching. Several resorts and restaurants are located around the backwaters.
Krishnapuram Palace was built in the 18th century and features typical Kerala-style architecture with sloping roofs, narrow corridors, and dormer windows. The palace houses various striking paintings, artifacts, weapons, and sculptures from the bygone era. The palace's museum, with its impressive mural artwork, is a major tourist attraction. The palace is surrounded by an idyllic garden, a reflection pool, and a temple. The palace is closed on Mondays, and the visiting hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
After visiting the palace, head over to Marari Beach. A perfect retreat for beach lovers, this magnificent beach is located in a picturesque fishing village. The unique feature of Marari Beach is that it remains largely untouched by commercialization and tourism. The beautiful long stretches of golden sand and crystal-clear waters are perfectly complemented by the swaying palm trees that dot the coastline. It is an excellent spot for swimming, sunbathing, and trying out local cuisine at nearby restaurants. The beach is open all day, and there are no entry fees.
Two days may be insufficient to cover all of Alleppey's highlights. Those who want to spend less time in the backwaters can spend more time exploring the city and trying out local cuisine. Popular dishes are chuttuli meen (grilled fish) and karimeen pollichathu (spiced fish wrapped in banana leaf). If there is more time, visit the Mullakkal Rajeswari Temple and St. Mary's Forane Church. Those who want to spend more time on the beach can visit nearby attractions like Alappuzha Lighthouse, Pathiramanal Island, and Arthunkal Church.
