Begin your day early with a trek to Chembra Peak. At 2,100 meters above sea level, it is the highest peak in Wayanad. The trek takes around 4-5 hours, and the trail is steep and challenging, with beautiful views of the surrounding valley. The highlight of the trek is a heart-shaped lake on the way, believed to have never dried up.
After the trek, head to Edakkal Caves, a prehistoric site that dates back to 6000 BC. The cave art here is said to be around 8000 years old and depicts humans, animals, and symbols. The trek to the caves is an hour long and involves some steep climb. The view from the top is fantastic, with a view of the entire valley.
Spend a day on Kuruva Island, an uninhabited island that is home to a vast expanse of greenery, forests, and streams. The bamboo rafting is a unique and fun experience where you can spot some exotic bird species and animals. Don't forget to carry food and water with you as there are no shops or restaurants on the island.
End your trip with a visit to the Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earth dam in India. The dam has a fantastic view of the surrounding hills and offers activities like trekking and boating in the lake. Don't forget to try the delicious food at the restaurant nearby, which is famous for its fish curry and rice.
With more time, you can explore other wonderful places like Sentinel Rock Waterfall, Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary, and Soochipara Falls. With less time, you can skip Edakkal Caves or Banasura Sagar Dam. Plan your visit in the winter months between October and February when the weather is pleasant, and the humidity is low. Carry comfortable trekking shoes, light clothing, and carry food and water while trekking and visiting Kuruva Island.
