Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram is located south of Chennai. This historic town is famous for its temples and monuments that were built during the Pallava dynasty. Spend the day exploring the Shore Temple, Pancha Rathas and the Arjuna's Penance. Relax in the evening watching the waves and the sunset at the beach.
Visit the temple town of Kumbakonam, which is home to many ancient temples and is known for its brass vessels. Start with a visit to the Adi Kumbeswarar Temple and then move to the Nageswaran temple and Sarangapani temple. The Darasuram temple is another beautiful example of Dravidian architecture. End the day with shopping and trying out local food.
Spend your day exploring the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu, Thanjavur. Start with the Brihadeeswarar Temple, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and admire the stunning architecture and ancient history. Next, visit the Rajarajan Manimandapam and Thanjavur Palace. End the day with shopping for the famous Tanjore paintings and traditional artifacts.
If you have more time, you can add a visit to the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple and the Chidambaram temple.
