Visit the Arunachaleswarar Temple, one of the largest temples in South India, and a well-known pilgrimage site. Explore the rambling complex with its vividly painted ceilings, towering gopurams, and shrines dedicated to various gods and goddesses. Take a hike up Arunachala Hill and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
Start with a visit to the Sathya Gnana Sabhai Temple, the spiritual headquarters of the Arutperunjothi Ramalinga Adigalar, the Tamil savant and social reformer. Then head to Chidambaram Nataraja Temple, one of the five holiest Shiva temples known for its incredible architecture and depiction of the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva.
Start with the magnificent Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the finest examples of South Indian temple architecture. Then visit the Raja Museum with its rich collection of decorative art, bronze artefacts, and ancient manuscripts. End the day with a sunset boat ride on Sivaganga Tank.
Start the day with a visit to the Thanjavur Palace and Art Gallery, which houses the impressive collection of Chola Bronzes and numerous sculptures from the 9th to the 12th century. Then, tour the Brahadeeswara Temple, which, with its iconic towering Gopurams, is another brilliant example of Dravidian temple architecture.
If you have more time, add a visit to the Dharasuram Airavateswara Temple, a highly ornamental temple showcasing Chola style architecture, located just 35 km from Tanjore. If you have less time, you can skip the Thanjavur Palace and Art Gallery visit. Also, make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring an umbrella or hat since these sites tend to get crowded and exposed to sunlight.
