The Edakkal Caves are a fascinating archeological site located on top of Ambukutty Mala. To get there, you'll have to trek for about 45 minutes, but the stunning views of Wayanad and the Western Ghats make it worth it. The caves are known for their Neolithic cave paintings, which date back to 6,000 BCE. The paintings depict hunting scenes, humans, animals, and symbols, and offer a glimpse into the lives of prehistoric humans. The site also offers an audio-visual showcase of the significance of the caves, and there is a museum where you can learn more about the local history and culture.
The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is an ideal place for nature lovers. The sanctuary is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including elephants, tigers, leopards, sambar deer, bison, and monkeys. Hop on an off-roading jeep safari that takes you through the dense forest, and watch the animals in their natural habitat. There is also a watchtower where you can get a bird's eye view of the forest. In the evening, take a leisurely stroll around the Pookode Lake and enjoy the sunset.
Start your day with a visit to the scenic Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India. The dam is built on the Karamanathodu River and is surrounded by lush green hills. Take a boat ride to the small islands on the reservoir, or trek through the surrounding hills and explore the Banasura hills and waterfalls. Don't forget to capture the beautiful view of the hills from the top and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the place.
The Soochipara Falls is a spectacular waterfall located near Meppadi in Wayanad. The waterfalls from a height of 200 meters and cascades down into a pool. The falls are surrounded by dense forests, making it a popular trekking spot. Follow the trails that lead to the falls, and enjoy the view of lush greenery, chirping birds, and clear skies. You can also take a dip in the pool underneath the falls, but beware of the strong currents and slippery rocks.
