4-Day Itinerary for Sri Lanka

  1. Day 1: Sigiriya Rock Fortress
3 hours (101 km) from Bandaranaike International Airport, Colombo

Begin your trip with a visit to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. This ancient castle atop a 200-meter-high rock formation offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding jungle, water gardens, and frescoes that date back to the 5th century. The climb to the top takes around 1.5 hours, but the reward is definitely worth it. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water for the climb.

  2. Day 2: Temple of the Tooth, Kandy
2 hours (95.4 km) from Sigiriya

Next on your itinerary is a visit to the Temple of the Tooth, one of the most sacred places for Buddhists. The temple houses one of Buddha's teeth, which was brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century. The temple complex is large; it surrounds a beautiful lake, and the architecture is breathtaking. You may have to take your shoes off when entering the temple, so be sure to bring appropriate footwear. If you're lucky, you may even witness a traditional Sri Lankan drumming performance!

  3. Day 3: Whale Watching, Mirissa
3 hours (135 km) from Kandy

On the third day of your itinerary, head to Mirissa for an unforgettable whale watching experience. You can catch a glimpse of blue whales, humpback whales, and dolphins during the whale watching season from November to April. You can take a boat tour from the harbor, and the tour usually lasts for about 4-5 hours. Be sure to carry a jacket, sunscreen, and motion sickness tablets if required.

  4. Day 4: Galle Fort, Galle
2 hours 30 minutes (126 km) from Mirissa

Conclude your trip with a visit to Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fort was built-in 1588 by the Portuguese and has been preserving its unique architecture and cultural heritage ever since. The photogenic streets within the thick walls of the fort are filled with colonial buildings, cafes, boutique stores, and art galleries. There’s a lighthouse at the southernmost tip of the fort providing an excellent view of the Indian Ocean. Enjoy a leisurely evening exploring the nooks and corners of the fort before heading back.
