Exploring the Natural Beauty of Ernakulam: A 2-Day Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary

    Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary, located in the heart of the city, is a green oasis with excellent opportunities for birdwatching. Spread over 2.74 hectares, the sanctuary is home to a variety of resident and migratory birds including little egret, bright-headed cormorant, and black-crowned night heron. You can take a stroll along the circular path that runs through the park or rent a boat to explore the sanctuary's lake. There's a watchtower in the park that provides a panoramic view of the surroundings.

  2. Day 1: Hill Palace Museum
    25 minutes (9km) from Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary

    After exploring the sanctuary, head to Hill Palace Museum, located on a hillock in Tripunithura. Built in 1865, it was the administrative headquarters of the Cochin Royal Family and is now converted into a museum. The museum houses a collection of archaeological and heritage artifacts, including ancient coins, weapons, pottery and historical documents. The highlight of the museum is the display of the crown, throne and other regalia of the Cochin kings and queens. The museum also has a deer park and an ayurvedic medicinal plant garden.

  3. Day 2: Thattekad Bird Sanctuary
    1 hour 10 minutes (50km) from the Ernakulam Junction Railway Station

    Thattekad Bird Sanctuary also known as Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers. Located on the banks of the River Periyar, the sanctuary has a dense evergreen and deciduous forest that is home to a vast number of bird species. Some of the frequently spotted birds are Malabar gray hornbill, Indian pitta, woodpecker, and drongo. You can go on a guided birding walk, trek the jungle trails or go on a boat safari to explore the sanctuary.

  4. Day 2: Athirapally Waterfalls
    1 hour 25 minutes (60km) from Thattekad Bird Sanctuary

    After a bird watching expedition, drive to Athirapally Waterfalls, a beautiful cascade on the Chalakudy River. The falls are nestled amidst lush green forests and can be reached after a short hike. You can enjoy multiple viewpoints of the falls and take a refreshing dip in the water. A popular filming spot, Athirapally waterfalls are an excellent place to sit and admire the scenic beauty of the region.
