Begin your trip by exploring the Western National Parks and Monuments, including Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, and Fort Davis National Historic Site. At Guadalupe Mountains, hike to the summit of Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas. At Carlsbad Caverns, take a self-guided tour of the natural limestone formations. Finish the day by exploring the historic Fort Davis.
Take a scenic drive through Big Bend National Park to Santa Elena Canyon, where towering cliffs create a breathtaking backdrop for a leisurely hike along the Rio Grande. After lunch, explore the ghost town of Terlingua, once a booming mining community, and now a quirky destination for artists and live music.
Spend the day exploring the rugged backcountry of the Big Bend Ranch State Park. The park is a haven for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding with over 238 miles of trails. Visit the Hoodoos, unique rock formations; hike to the stunning overlooks of the River Road and the Solitario; or enjoy a dip in the cool water of the Fresno Creek.
Start the day with a relaxing soak in one of the natural hot springs at Big Bend National Park. Then, head to Marfa, a tranditional town with a growing contemporary arts scene. Stroll down the streets and stop at the Chinati Foundation museum, a contemporary art museum featuring large-scale installations. Spend the evening at the mysterious Marfa Lights Viewing Center, where visitors can experience unexplained light phenomena.
If you have more time, consider adding a scenic drive on River Road or hiking the Window Trail at Big Bend National Park. If you have less time, skip the Santa Elena Canyon and Fort Davis and spend more time in Marfa. Be sure to pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and snacks for the outdoor adventures. Lastly, check the park websites or call ahead to verify opening and closing times.
