Start the adventure by visiting the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park, a protected area home to many rare and endangered species. Take a safari through the park to admire the beauty of the Western Ghats. You can spot elephants, tigers, leopards and various bird species. The sanctuary has a lot of trekking trails, picnic spots, and bamboo rafting on Aliayar dam is a must-not-miss experience.
Sholayar Dam is the second deepest dam in Asia located between the Valparai plateau and the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu. On the way to the dam, take a short stop at the Aliyar Dam viewpoint if you missed it on Day 1. Admire the picturesque view of the mountains spotted with tea and coffee plantations that are unique to Valparai. At Upper Sholayar Dam, nestled in the tropical evergreen forests, the spectacular views of the dam and the reservoir are breathtaking.
For a perfect end to your adventure, make sure you visit Loam’s viewpoint, which is a great spot for a panoramic view of the valley and the forest. Next, head to the Koolangal River, where you can swim and indulge in Adventure Activities like river trekking, camping, and rock climbing. The river is surrounded by dense forests that add to the excitement of the experience.
If you have more time, visit the Aliyar Dam viewpoint, explore tea and coffee plantations, or go for an off-road Jeep Safari. If you are looking to cut down a day, skip Loam's viewpoint and Koolangal River and explore the villages, temples and forts around the town. Keep in mind that the park is closed on Tuesdays, and visitors are allowed from 6 am-6 pm. Winters are the best time to visit the sanctuary to enjoy pleasant temperatures, and clear skies.
