Begin your trip at Varkala Beach, the iconic stretch of golden sand renowned for its thermal springs and serene seascapes, as you soak up the warm morning sun and languish on the gentle surfs of the Arabian Sea. On the north end of the beach is a small shelter with yellow walls representing the local lifeguard station. The beach is usually filled with tourists, so carry your own food and water as the options are limited and tend to be expensive.
The historic Janardhan Swamy Temple known for its ancient architecture and religious significance, is a Hindu temple that prominently stands out on the beach. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple has a gopuram representing traditional, colourful, and majestic architecture, with many intricate carvings and spiritual sculptures embellishing the exterior walls. The temple is situated amidst lush greenery and calm surroundings, providing an oasis of calm and tranquility near the beach. After offering your prayers, indulge in some South-Indian delicacies from the street-side vendors surrounding the temple.
Located further ahead of Varkala Beach is Papa Sanam Beach. It is primarily known for its religious significance as it is believed that a dip in the sea at this beach would wash away all the sins. Moreover, the beach has black sands and is less crowded, creating an idyllic and peaceful ambience as the sound of the waves fills the air. After a refreshing swim, take a stroll to the Sivagiri Mutt, the abode of the philosopher and Hindu sage, Sree Narayana Guru. Take in the sights of the beautiful countryside and enjoy the serenity the location provides.
If you have some more time, you can consider visiting the Kappil Beach situated just two kilometers away from the Varkala cliff. It is a beautiful, unexplored destination surrounded by palm trees and a vast beach. Similarly, the Anjengo Fort, which holds historical relevance, is just 5 kilometers from Varkala cliff and offers breathtaking views of the sea. In case of less time, you can skip visiting the Janardhan Swamy Temple or Papasnanam Beach.
