Start your day by visiting the Griffith Observatory. This iconic spot offers outstanding views of the LA Skyline, and you can learn about astronomy in the state-of-the-art planetarium. After that, hit the trail and take a hike to the Hollywood Sign to see the famous landmark up close. The hike can take around 2-3 hours, but the breathtaking views of the city and nature are worth it.
Drive east to Joshua Tree National Park and spend the day surrounded by stunning rock formations, hidden valleys, and unique plants like the namesake Joshua Trees. You can hike or rock climb at spots like Ryan Mountain, Lost Horse Mine, or Hidden Valley, among others. If you’re lucky, you could see bighorn sheep or desert tortoises.
Wrap up your trip with a relaxing day at Santa Monica Beach. Rent bikes and cruise along the boardwalk, rollerblade, or take surf lessons. Walk to Venice Canals, a charming area that feels like a hidden oasis in the middle of the city, and see the unique homes and bridges. You can also find plenty of cafes and restaurants around.
If you have more time, consider visiting other outdoor wonders like Yosemite National Park, Lake Tahoe, or Big Sur. If you have less time, skip Hollywood Sign or Venice Canals, or combine Days 1 and 2 and stay overnight near Joshua Tree for stargazing. Remember to bring water, sunscreen, and appropriate shoes and attire for the outdoor activities. Traffic in LA can be hectic, so plan accordingly and try to avoid peak hours.
