Also known as the Dutch Palace, the Mattancherry Palace exhibits the traditional Kerala architectural style. This palace was gifted to the Raja of Kochi by the Portuguese in the 16th century. The palace houses many murals that depict the stories from the Hindu epics. About 2 hours are enough to appreciate its grandeur and art.
The Hill Palace Museum is the largest archaeological museum in Kerala. It showcases a well-preserved collection of the belongings and artefacts of the Kochi royal family. This serene place also has a deer park and an extensive garden that offers a green oasis amid the urban chaos.
A hidden gem in the heart of Kochi, Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary is a paradise for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts. The sanctuary houses many species of migratory and resident birds, reptiles and butterflies, and small mammals in a lush green environment. A walk along the many trails will make for a fulfilling and relaxing experience.
If you have more time, you can visit the nearby Fort Kochi beach, which is a good spot for a relaxed evening and a view of the setting sun. The beach has many stalls selling local delicacies and souvenirs. If you have less time, you can skip the Hill Palace Museum and instead visit the nearby Paniyeli Poru waterfall, which is about 30 km away from the bird sanctuary.
