This is the largest and most famous temple dedicated to Lord Murugan and is believed to have been built by the Pandyas in the 9th century. The temple features two gopurams, one of which stands at 137 feet, and has several shrines dedicated to other deities. The temple is also known for its utsavams and festivals, including the 16-day Soorasamharam festival celebrated during November and December.
After your temple visit, head down to the Thiruchendur Beach, which is a beautiful stretch of golden sand on the Bay of Bengal. The park is spread over 46 acres and has a variety of flora and fauna on display, including more than 100 species of birds, insects and reptiles. End your trip with a visit to the beautiful town of Kanyakumari, located at the southernmost tip of India. Other attractions in Kanyakumari include the Thiruvalluvar Statue, the Padmanabhapuram Palace, and the Kanyakumari Beach. Don't forget to catch the sunset, which is said to be the most beautiful in India.
If you have more time, you can also visit the nearby cities of Tuticorin and Madurai, which are both famous for their temples and rich history. If you have less time, you can skip the Kanyakumari trip and spend more time at the Thiruchendur Murugan Temple and the Tiruchendur Eco Park.
