Pukará de Quitor is a historic fortress built by the Atacama people to protect themselves against the Inca Empire. The entrance fee is $3000 CLP. A guided tour is recommended for a better understanding of the history and restoration work that has taken place in recent years.
Calama is a gateway city to Atacama, a mining town and the capital of the El Loa Province. Take a walk around the main square to see the Iglesia San Francisco church, visit the Regional Museum and its unique collection of Atacama mummies or try some delicious local food at the Central Market.
La Casona is a famous restaurant in San Pedro de Atacama, serving traditional Chilean cuisine made with fresh and local ingredients. Try the Pisco Sour cocktail or the delicious empanadas. Prices are around $15000 CLP.
Puritama Hot Springs is a series of thermal pools surrounded by the Andes Mountains and native vegetation. The entrance fee is $15000 CLP per person and includes access to changing rooms, lockers and showers.
The Petrohue Waterfalls are a must-see attraction when visiting Puerto Varas. The falls, formed by volcanic rocks and sediment deposits, offer stunning views of the Osorno Volcano and Emerald Lake. The entrance fee to the park is $4000 CLP.
Casa Valdes is a cosy and elegant restaurant located in Puerto Varas, offering modern Chilean cuisine and handmade cocktails. Enjoy the view of Llanquihue Lake from the terrace and try the delicious seafood dishes or the vegetarian options. Prices range from $8000 to $25000 CLP.
If you have more time, you could visit the Tatio Geysers or the Valle del Arcoiris. If you have less time, you could skip Calama and go straight to the Puritama Hot Springs, or shorten the stay at Petrohue Waterfalls. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and clothes suitable for hiking and swimming, and bring sunscreen, water and a camera.
