Tropea Old Town will transport you back to the medieval ages with its ancient fortifications and narrow streets. Climb the 85 steps of the belvedere in Piazza Cannone for stunning panoramic views of the town and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Visit the 12th-century Norman Cathedral of Santa Maria dell'Isola, located on a rocky promontory, and find out why it's a prominent religious site despite its small size. Explore the labyrinthine alleyways and housing of Tropea Old Town, where you can find craft shops, restaurants, and gelato shops.
Tropea's beaches are the main reason to visit the area. The white sandy beaches and turquoise waters are picturesque and offer excellent swimming, sunbathing, and snorkelling. Marina dell'Isola, situated between the cliffs and the island, is Tropea's most renowned beach, and has facilities including showers, sunbeds, and umbrellas. If you prefer a quieter place, head to the cycling or walking path at Lungomare, starting from the Santa Domenica's beach, three kilometers north of Tropea, enjoy the stunning views of the sea and the coastline.
If you have more time, take the 20-minute train from Tropea to Pizzo, where you can discover the charming town with picturesque alleys and the renowned tartufo ice cream. If you have less time, it's possible to combine both the Old Town and the Tropea beaches in one day for a more leisure experience. Remember to bring your beach essentials such as sunscreen, a hat, and bottled water on your beach day!
