Start your honeymoon by driving down the scenic East Coast Road to Mamallapuram, a quaint historic town that is known both for its beautiful beaches and its intricate stone carvings that date back to the Pallava Dynasty. Begin your day by exploring the UNESCO-listed Shore Temple and the Five Rathas, rock-cut shrines that are named after the five Pandavas from the epic Mahabharata. Next, head to the nearby Arjuna's Penance, an enormous bas-relief that tells the story of the descent of the Ganges River from heaven to earth. After a romantic walk on Mamallapuram's secluded beach, wander into its lively bazaars to shop for souvenirs and sample some local seafood at one of the many thatched-roof shacks that line the shore.
Drive down to the picturesque seaside town of Pondicherry, which was once a French colonial outpost and still retains much of its old-world charm. Begin your day in the French Quarter, where the streets are lined with elegant colonial mansions and vibrant bougainvillaea. Take a guided walking tour of the area, stopping at the ornate Sacred Heart Church and the beautiful Botanical Garden. Next, head to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, a serene spiritual enclave that was founded in the early 20th century. After lunch, head to the charming seaside neighbourhood of White Town, where you can stroll along the Promenade Beach and explore the colourful houses and shops along the streets. End your day with a candlelit dinner at one of Pondicherry's many chic French restaurants and enjoy some creamy crème brûlée for dessert.
If you have more time, consider adding a day trip to the temple town of Kanchipuram, which is famous for its silk saris and beautiful temples such as the Kailasanathar Temple and Sri Ekambaranathar Temple. Alternatively, you can spend an extra day exploring the beautiful beaches in and around Pondicherry, such as Serenity Beach and Paradise Beach. If you have less time, consider skipping Mamallapuram altogether and spending both days in Pondicherry, which has plenty of attractions to keep you engaged.
