Two-Day Itinerary for Varkala

  1. Day 1: Varkala Cliff Beach
    10 minutes (1.5 km) from Varkala Train Station

    Varkala Cliff Beach also known as Papanasam beach is a beautiful beach situated at the bottom of a stunning cliff. The beach is quite popular amongst tourists for its black sand and serene surroundings. The cliff over the beach is a magnificent sight, particularly during the sunset. One can indulge in the watersports activities such as Parasailing, Jet Skiing and Surfing which are available here. Along the beach start several restaurants and shacks which offer fresh seafood and continental dishes.

  2. Day 1: Sivagiri Mutt
    5 minutes (1.5 km) from Varkala Cliff Beach

    Sivagiri Mutt is a renowned spiritual center for the followers of Sri Narayana Guru. It is a memorial of the great reformer and offers an insight into his life and teachings. The mutt is a calm and tranquil place ideal for relaxation and meditation. The mutt complex has several exhibition rooms that display the life of Narayana Guru, depicting his teachings and social reform movements. The museum is closed on Mondays.

  3. Day 1: Papnasam Beach
    15 minutes (6 km) from Sivagiri Mutt

    Papanasam Beach is a picturesque beach with golden sand, clear water and natural springs. The beach is known for its sacred waters which are believed to have medicinal and healing properties. The beach is located at the southern end of Varkala which is lined with cliffs. One of the highlights of the beach is the sunsets, which are extremely soothing to the eyes. The beach also offers some local food stalls that serve lip-smacking seafood. If you are here on a Sunday evening, don't forget to enjoy the local cultural programs which are held here every weekend.

  4. Day 2: Janardhana Swamy Temple
    15 minutes (7 km) from Papnasam Beach

    The Janardhana Swamy Temple is a 2000-year-old temple that attracts Hindu pilgrims from all over the country. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is considered to be one of the oldest and most sacred temples in India. The temple is surrounded by lush green trees and offers a serene and peaceful environment. The temple has strict dress rules, and you need to cover your shoulders and knees to enter the temple premises. The temple is open from 4:00 AM to 12:00 PM and then from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

  5. Day 2: Kappil Lake
    10 minutes (4 km) from Janardhana Swamy Temple

    Kappil Lake is a serene and beautiful lake located near the sea coast. The lake is surrounded by coconut trees and offers a stunning view of the Arabian sea. The place is ideal for enjoying the scenic beauty, serene atmosphere, and local food. The lake has some famous houseboat rides along with kayak paddling, boating, and shopping shacks nearby.

Useful Tips

If you have an extra day, you can visit Anjengo Fort, which is located at a distance of 11 Km from Varkala. It is an ancient Portuguese fort built-in 1695 AD and is now open for visitors.

If you have less time, you can pick any three of the five locations mentioned and plan your day accordingly. You can start early to cover as much ground as possible.
