The Lingaraj Temple, an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, is a perfect immersion into India's rich culture and history. The impressive architecture and intricate carvings on the temple walls will leave you marvelled. Visitors are required to remove their shoes and dress modestly. Photography is not allowed inside the temple. The best time to visit is during the morning or evening aarti ceremonies.
The Mukteswara Temple is a 10th-century temple of Lord Shiva and is famous for its intricate carvings depicting stories from Hindu mythology. Its beautiful torana (arch) is a masterpiece of architecture. Photography is allowed inside the temple but be sure to dress modestly.
End the day at Ekamra Haat, a vibrant local market that showcases the handicrafts, textiles, and local cuisine of Orissa. This is a perfect place to buy souvenirs as well as organic produce and homemade sweets. The market is open from 11 am to 10 pm daily and offers an excellent opportunity to sample some of Orissa’s famous street food.
The Dhauli Hill and Shanti Stupa stand as a symbol of non-violence and peace. The site marks the place where the Kalinga War was fought and where the great Emperor Ashoka is said to have given up his violent ways. The Shanti Stupa has a beautiful white dome structure and offers an unobstructed view of the surrounding countryside.
The Odisha State Museum is a treasure trove of Orissa's rich cultural heritage. The museum has an excellent collection of archaeological finds, ancient sculptures, manuscripts and coins, and tribal art. It also has a beautiful garden and library. The museum is closed on Mondays and public holidays.
If you have an extra day, visit the Konark Sun Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. If you have less time, skip either Ekamra Haat or Odisha State Museum. Wear comfortable shoes and carry a water bottle with you as most of these places require walking. It is also suggested to carry a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses.
