Begin your cultural immersion in Kerala's historic and charming Fort Kochi neighborhood. St. Francis Church, the oldest church in India, dating back to the 15th century, is a good starting point. Then stroll through the picturesque lanes, lined with colorful colonial buildings, and see the famous Chinese Fishing Nets by the shore.
In the evening, experience the grandeur of Kathakali dance, one of the oldest forms of classical dance-drama in the world, at the Kerala Kathakali Centre. The dancers, adorned in colorful and intricate costumes, depict Indian mythological stories through facial expressions, hand gestures, and body movements.
Travel to Munnar, located in the Western Ghats, known for its rolling hills, tea plantations, and spice gardens. Visit a spice plantation to see and learn about the cultivation of cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, and other spices. Take a guided tour and learn about their medicinal and culinary properties.
To continue your immersion in Kathakali dance, attend a traditional Kathakali class in Munnar. Learn about the techniques, mudras (hand gestures), and expressions used in this storytelling dance form. You will also have a chance to dress up in the traditional costumes and learn some dance moves.
If you have more time, consider visiting the Kerala Folklore Museum in Kochi, which showcases art, architecture, and cultural artifacts from Kerala's different communities. In Munnar, you can also go trekking, visit the tea plantations, or see the Eravikulam national park. If you have less time, you can skip the Kathakali class and opt for a shorter evening demonstration instead.
