Thirukadaiyur Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the 7 Mukti Sthalas in Tamil Nadu. It has a 4000-year history and a unique structural architecture. Opposite the temple is Sri Sankara Mutt temple, which is dedicated to Adi Shankara. The shrine has an in-house goshala where one can see cows and bulls being reared. Film enthusiasts can watch Sankaracharya, which depicts the life of Adi Shankara. Pick up garlands, coconuts and other religious items from vendors outside.
Papnasam Beach boasts of calm, shallow waters that are perfect for swimmers and sunbathers. The beach is said to have therapeutic powers and is believed to wash off one's sins. One can trek up to the nearby Siva temple or exercise, stretch and meditate on the rocky terrain. Sip on fresh coconut water and munch on bhajias sold by local vendors. Be respectful of the peculiar rituals followed by the locals.
The itinerary above is for travellers spending three days in Papnasam. If you have more time, visit Pazhaya Courtallam, which are a series of waterfalls near Kutralam Falls. If you have less time, skip the temples and spend two consecutive days at the beach. Wear comfortable shoes and carry a bag with snacks, water, and sunscreen, even for short treks.
