Hoàn Kiếm Lake is a scenic spot that dominates Hanoi's graceful Old Quarter. The lake is close to Ngoc Son Temple, accessible by The Huc Bridge, and attracts most of the tourists in the city. You can explore the temple, stroll around the lake or hire a swan-shaped paddleboat that makes for a romantic experience.
At the Vietman Museum of Ethnology, you can learn about the various ethnic groups of Vietnam with artifacts, videos, and displays. Afterward, take a walk to Hanoi Opera House, built-in 1911, with French architectural style, magnificent structure and sound quality. Finish off the day sampling some street food in Hanoi's vibrant Old Quarter with its charming atmosphere and lively streets.
The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is a massive marble edifice containing the embalmed body of Vietnam's famous communist leader, Ho Chi Minh. Also, stop by the Presidential Palace, Ho Chi Minh's house, and the One Pillar Pagoda nearby. Follow that up with a walk to the country's first university, the Temple of Literature, dedicated to Confucius and scholar studies. This place is full of well-manicured gardens, traditional Vietnamese architecture and has an excellent collection of artifacts dating back to the duration.
We recommend using app-based ride-sharing services or metered taxis to get around the city. You can also use the public buses or cyclos (traditional rickshaws), which offer a more authentic experience. Expect to spend approximately 200,000 VND (approx. $9) per day on transportation, including car rental if necessary.
If you have additional time, try to visit the West Lake, which is the largest freshwater lake in Hanoi, famous for its stunning sunsets, historic temples or the Vietnam Women's Museum featuring extraordinary, informative collections about Vietnamese women. Conversely, if you have less time, consider dropping in one of the museums featured in the itinerary, and on suboptimal weather days, indoor activities such as cooking classes or watching Water Puppet Theatre can be enjoyable.
Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) serves Hanoi and is located about 17 miles from the city center. You can take a taxi or arrange private transfer which takes approximately 30 minutes (without traffic). Alternatively, there's a public shuttle bus that costs around 40,000 VND and arrives at the city's main bus station.
